Template Based Email question

My objective is to display the value of a field from a template (DCR) attached to a workflow inside the Subject of the Template Based Email.

I assume I must use the dcr.workflowinformation to attempt to get a handle to the DCR -- something like dcr.workflowinformation.task[0].files ... -- but I don't know if I'm heading down the wrong road. Is there a better way to get the value of the DCR field? Should I look into setting the field value to a variable from the workflow that the Template Based Email could pick up.

Any ideas would be helpful.
