DataDeploy , doc and pdf files

Does datadeploy only deploy templating created files to the database? I setup DataDeploy and then created a deployment of the EA out of Teamsite and it only created rows for html and htm files that were created using templates. Will it do other file types? If not then why even use this product? Metadata should be able to be moved to the db from any type of file
