DCRParser : Replicants Within Replicants

I need to parse values out of fields in replicants within replicants (within containers and possibly other replicants) in Perl. I started off with straight XPath but the query strings got so long it was ridiculous. Has anybody done this and if so, can you provide some guidance? The documentation I can find is a little light on this detail.
