Reporting - Replacing Itext PDF plugin

Hi ,
As per my knowlowdge BIRT uses iText (lowgie) plugin for PDF , is their any possibility that we can replace that iTEXt with some other open source plugin .

Will BIRt supports it ?

because when we user BIRT runtime jar it internally contains iTEXT packages so will be possible to replace this ?

Kindly let me know youe experiments or thoughts ?
