Disassociate page from template AFTER creation?

Back in 2009 someone posted this question was asked without any response. I'm trying again.

Can a page created with a template be disassociated from the template anywhere other than in the "new page" form? Specifically after it's been edited, pushed to production, lived there for a while then someone wants to remove a component that is part of the template, but only for this page.
