Nailing down LSDS performance & Memory issues

Looking for some tips/pointers/RTFMs.

Running LSDS on Tomcat on Linux servers, about 12 GB of RAM, and heap of about 7 GB. Performance is pretty snappy until we get crawled. Looks like it is filling up the heap with the cache (when we hit JCS and clear cache, the heap is returned). Navigation component is probably the culprit as the Sitemap is about 2 MB. So we are changing that.

Currently we have the pages (ones that are "static" LSDS pages) to cache until a new one is deployed. I have also tried dropping the number of pages cached (by default it is 384), that seems to help but not stop the out of memory issues.

Any ideas ? Where should I look ? We are currently stopping robots, but that is not a long term solution
