Tweaking server.xml ?

Seeing some server issues on a new install of LSDS 731, Linux and Tomcat.

The server is seriously beefy (several processors and a ton of RAM) but we are handling only a few transactions a second. Java seems to be using a bunch of resources but we have simple site with only a couple of externals.

I have not find anything that is helpful in tweaking the server. Is there a place I can find some information ? I am using Google right now, but rather have something LSDS specific.
