How is a URL Alias implemented in runtime?

The reason for asking is the following: the web server stops directory browsing and we would need to know if there is any autonomatic configuration updates done from the websphere app layer into the IHS apache web server to store the urls. If there is any storage in the web server then a web crawler will not work.
