Can I use iwpt_dcr_value if I moving from dcr to xml dcr-type?

I have used dcr-type of iwov for many years. I am now moving to xml.

In my tpl file I use to use iwpt_dcr_value to get the dcr values.

my $market = iwpt_dcr_value('dcr.market');

Can I still use iwpt_dcr_value to get the dcr values if I move from dcr to xml dcr-type? I ask because I am unable to get any values back from the DCR after changing it to xml.
