I've opened a ticket with Autonomy regarding this, but just in case anyone has stumbled across this issue, please feel free to chime in:

The LiveSite 3.1.0.2 out-of-the-box breadcrumb component/object is not working properly. The following OOTB component...
Interwoven -> Page Element -> Navigation -> Horizontal Breadcrumb
...uses the
com.interwoven.livesite.external.impl.Breadcrumb object. We have custom breadcrumbs that are also based on the same object; as a result, they no longer work either.
Please observe the following test pages that contain the out-of-the-box breadcrumb component. In LS 3.1.0.0, the breadcrumb correctly displays the page/node you're viewing. However, in LS 3.1.0.2, it does not:
