Are Hibernate Mappings Needed in 7.1?

The SitePublisher 7.1 Dev Guide still contains the appendix for extending the data model. I would have thought that with the advent of LiveSite Content Services that one would not need to extend the data model - that one would instead just leverage queries into LSCS. The manual doesn't give a lot of guidance around integration between LSDS and LSCS. We're currently taking a deeper look at the stuff in the lscs-example spar, but if anyone can shed any kind of light on their experiences and guesses at best practice, I would appreciate it.
