DD substitution Q

OK I do not think I can do what I want to (with DD substitution) but here goes.

I am using DD to push a PR to a file, I also want to push the destination URL.

I was hoping that I could use the substitution section to create the URL (which I can) however I can only do it by overwriting the original path variable (which DD uses)

What I would like to do is set a second path variable (path1) with path, use that in the substitution and go to town.

I figure I can do it with a preprocessor and know I can by adding a field to the DCR. But I would have thought this common functionality with DD so I thought I would see how other people do it.
