The old version of the custom report item example are under https://www.eclipse.org/articles/article.php?file=Article-BIRT-ExtensionTutorial1/index.html and https://www.eclipse.org/articles/article.php?file=Article-BIRT-ExtensionTutorial2/index.html
A new version of it can be found now on github. I have copied, modified and tested it on the newest BIRT eclipse 2019 version. The git repository for the example on GitHub is: https://github.com/kstojanovski/birt.report.extension.tutorial_2
