Significance of Sitemap / default.sitemap

My current understanding is Sitemap tab uses default.sitemap to display nodes.
and also, some Interwoven components linke Breadcrumb use it.


Could someone elaborate on the significance of Sitemap/default.sitemap?
What all it is used for?
