Deleting files from MBDataDirectory\ImageDb directory

Is it possible to delete any folders or files from the 'MBDataDirectory\ImageDb' directory? This is a huge and ever-growing directory with old folders. We are trying to understand how we can/need to manage space on the server MediaBin is on...(ie - want to either delete stuff or backup to tape)
