using cci newdcr url, problems previewing DCT

We're using the casual contributor interface (CCI) url to create a new DCT...

http://schematest/iw/webdesk/newdcr?area_path=/default/main/portal/workarea/Communications&iw_tdt=Communications/CompanyNews

The DCT appears just fine, however, we get an javascript alert error pop up when we click the preview button

"There are no available presentation templates for the selected category and type."

However, when we go to the DCT directly from webdesk or TeamSite we're able to preview the DCT just fine. This appears to be just a problem with using CCI urls for the newdcr function. Has anyone encountered this problem? If so, is there a work around we can implement?
