Looking for a specific character in a text field

System

In a template I am creating, I am trying to write an if statement that looks for a text field that contains a *(asterick), if the text field contains an asterick then ..... else ......

I know how to do the If/Else statement but I do not know how to search a text field for the certain character. I do know how to do it in javascript using indexOf but since our Teamsite server is Unix, I cannot use javascript within the presentation template.

I was just going to have a check box within the datacapture.cfg next to the text field but they seem to sit sooooo far apart, it didn't look right.

Any help would be appreciated.
