Automating Unit tests

Out of curiousity, has anyone experimented with automating unit tests of either workflows or templates (or even base functionality like verifying permissions) using something like HttpUnit? If so, what has been your outcome and what lessons learned do you have for the rest of us? I'm considering doing a little experimentation, but I don't want to rehash a lot of someone else's lessons learned if I can avoid it.
