Passed-in multiselect value

I'm trying to figure out / remember how to access the elements of a multiple select list on the workflow instantiation form.

For instance, I give the user the option of selecting multiple approvers which converts to a grouptask. However, I also need to set these approvers as a workflow variable. If my variable name is "approver", __TAG__('approver'); appears to be an array whether one or multiple approvers are selected. However, when I try to access it as an array, it looks like it might be an object.

Is there some anatomy to this thing? I figure this is a pretty common requirement -- any pointers are appreciated.
